10 pointers to conquer your goals

Welcome! Thank you all for making a stop on my website. I hope that each person reading will be encouraged and reminded that it’s never too late to pursue your passions in life. Lately, I’ve been waking up feeling like I’m living an absolute dream. You know those dreams that are so good you wake up with a little drool on the side  of your mouth…and forget you have to get up for work or school, that kind of dream!

That leads me to the topic for this post, chasing after your dreams. When I look back at my life, every goal I’ve accomplished started from a thought. A thought that some may have considered to be crazy, but it was a thought that was worth pursuing.

As I look back on the many accomplishments in my life, I am also reminded of the chaotic moments as well. I had  some really dark moments. The time I hiked my first 14er (with no preparation) reminded me of the many obstacles I’ve had to overcome in this life. During the hike there were so many instances I had thoughts of log rolling down the mountain and going home to drink a piña colada. Did I do that? Of course not! By the time I reached the top of the mountain, I felt like everything in me was shut off (including my brain), but I made it! Moral of the story, I never gave up on my goals and neither should you! To all my dreamers, put on your running shoes and get moving towards that goal of yours today.

These tips are no particular order)

Set yourself up for success Although I am unable to recall the many careers I considered, I spent extensive time researching, observing and asking others about various careers. If you have an interest in something, seek out opportunities to learn more about it. Once you find something that interests you, sit down and make a plan. You have to be intentional about your goals.

Work hard & be consistent: As an athlete, initially it was a struggle to wake up early for workouts. I would wake up and then give myself permission to get an extra 2 minutes of sleep. Eventually, I beat that habit of hitting the snooze button and found a way to make my 5am workout everyday. Even when you don’t feel like putting in work, just do it!

Believe in yourself: I’ll expand on this in a future post because it took me a long time to get! There will be some people that believe in you and others that will doubt your ability before you tell them your plans. The only person whose opinion really matters the most is yours!

Let go of energy drainers: I love people, and I struggled for the longest to let go of negative people. It wasn’t until one day, I came to my sense that no one should have the power to control my future. Make a choice to let go of energy drainers that zap every ounce of juice in you. You don’t deserve to look like a withered plant that hasn’t seen a droplet of water in years. Use energy on yourself and who you want to become.

Dedicate time for yourself: I started to make it a habit to reflect (with no distraction) in the morning and night before going to bed. In those moments, I realized some of the doubts and fears that were holding me back. Once I identified my fears, I was then able to take action towards overcoming that thing I was scared to do.

Don’t compare yourself to others: Choose to focus on yourself and how you can grow each day.

Dream big: Once I made up my mind up I wanted to do something, I spent less time seeking the approval from others. I just went after it! Many folks will think your goals are unrealistic but keep dedicating time towards that goal. You weren’t made to be ordinary, so don’t be like the ordinary people around you with ordinary minds!

Be kind & positive to yourself: For the longest, I was my worst critic. For example, as an athlete I may have had an exceptional performance but I would dwell on that one mistake. It wasn’t until college that changed. It took making an effort to tell myself good job sometimes and that there is no such thing as being perfect in anything. That’s not to say you shouldn’t strive to excel in something, but don’t beat yourself up too much!

Embrace every season of this life: Being injured as an athlete helped me appreciate and cherish the many ups and downs in life. With every disappointment, there is always something you can take away. A failure is only a failure if you don’t find a way to learn from it. Your life may not be exactly where you want it to be but each day try and write down something you’re grateful for.

Spend time doing the things you enjoy! Don’t take life too seriously. Laugh, laugh, and laugh 🙂
